What is Vibrant Color 4.0?
Vibrant Color 4.0 Brown by Code Zero is a professional permanent colour cream with vegetal liposomes: a brown, level 4, with no added reflect. With Oxidizer 20 vol it covers white hair; on natural hair it lifts three quarters of a tone at most. It sits between the dark brown 3.0 and the light brown 5.0 and is the natural shade of level 4. It mixes with Oxidizer at a 1:1 ratio and one 100 ml tube is enough for two services.

New to Vibrant Color? How to read the shade code
Vibrant Color is Code Zero's permanent colour cream, with ammonia and vegetal liposomes: more than 100 shades in 100 ml tubes, arranged in families on the colour chart (naturals, ash, golden, copper, red, tobacco, beige and more). Every shade is mixed 1:1 with Oxidizer, except the 90 superbleaching shades (1:1.5). The digit before the point is the level, from 1 (black) to 10 (ultra light blond); the digits after the point are the reflect.

The first digit after the point is the main reflect (7.43 = copper golden); a doubled digit means an intense reflect (.11 = intense ash). The + sign marks the intense naturals, with more pigment (7.+). The 90 shades are the superbleaching shades, lifting up to 4-5 tones; 01 and 09 are toners; 0.22 to 0.66 are the Pure Pigments, added to the mix.
The starting base decides the colour
Vibrant Color 4.0 deposits natural pigment, with no added reflect, and on natural hair lifts three quarters of a tone at most: on the Code Zero table its lifting power is 3/4. The result is the shade plus what the hair already contains: first look at the base, that is the level, the percentage of white hair and whether the hair is natural, coloured or bleached, then choose the Oxidizer. The Code Zero colour chart shows on which bases 4.0 gives the best result. On the Code Zero colour wheel (Color Index) the naturals from 2.0 to 10.0 sit in the blue-violet sector: 4.0 is a neutral-cool brown that adds no warmth.

Mixing ratio 1:1. The processing time does not change with the volume: first application 30-40 minutes in total, touch-up 30 minutes. A colour does not lift an artificial colour: on coloured hair it only deposits. Ratings from the Code Zero colour chart: very good = the result matches the chart strand; good = full result with a slight difference; fair = acceptable but less faithful result: if possible, choose a shade closer to the base. 40 vol is not used with 4.0: it is for the strongest lifts with the lightest shades and with the superbleaching shades.
Vibrant Color 4.0 mixes and amounts
The ratio is always 1:1: for each part of cream, one part of Oxidizer.

Vibrant Color 4.0 on natural level 4 hair with white hair: first application
Starting point: natural level 4, never coloured, with white hair.
Formula: 50 ml of Vibrant Color 4.0 + 50 ml of Oxidizer 20 vol (1:1).
Processing time: on the lengths and ends, starting 2 cm from the root, for 10-15 minutes; then on the roots for a further 20-25 minutes.
Result: tone on tone at level 4, white hair covered.
Vibrant Color 4.0 on the regrowth: touch-up
Starting point: natural regrowth with white hair, lengths already coloured with 4.0.
Formula: 50 ml of Vibrant Color 4.0 + 50 ml of Oxidizer 20 vol (1:1).
Processing time: 20 minutes on the regrowth, then comb through all the hair for a further 10 minutes.
Result: even roots and lengths.
Vibrant Color 4.0 on level 3 hair with white hair: softer coverage
Starting point: natural level 3 with white hair, for a client who finds 3.0 too deep.
Formula: 50 ml of Vibrant Color 4.0 + 50 ml of Oxidizer 20 vol (1:1).
Processing time: as for the first application, 30-40 minutes in total.
Result: the white hair is covered at level 4 and the natural hair lightens by three quarters of a tone at most: a softer overall look than with 3.0, and less contrast at the regrowth.
Vibrant Color 4.0 on a level 5-6 base: darkening
Starting point: natural level 5 or 6, one or two tones lighter than the shade.
Formula: 50 ml of Vibrant Color 4.0 + 50 ml of Oxidizer 10 vol (1:1); 20 vol if there is white hair.
Processing time: as for the first application, 30-40 minutes in total.
Result: level 4. On level 6, which the chart rates fair, the result can come out slightly less deep than the chart strand.
Vibrant Color 4.0 on level 7 or lighter, or on bleached hair: pre-pigment first, then colour
Why: a very light base lacks the warm undertone that a brown needs: applied directly, 4.0 can come out dull, greenish or uneven.
Step 1, pre-pigmentation: 25 ml of 4.6 Deep Red Brown + 25 ml of Oxidizer 10 vol (1:1) on the light parts, for 10-15 minutes; then remove the excess with a towel.
Step 2, colour: 50 ml of Vibrant Color 4.0 + 50 ml of Oxidizer 10 vol (1:1), the volume the Code Zero leaflet gives for colouring bleached hair, for 30-40 minutes.
Note: first a strand test to see the result.
How to use Vibrant Color 4.0
- Wear gloves. Mix in a non-metal bowl with a plastic brush, both clean.
- Mix 50 ml of Vibrant Color 4.0 with 50 ml of Oxidizer (1:1) just before use, choosing the volume from the table above, and use the mix straight away. Apply to dry, unwashed hair.
- First application (never coloured hair): apply to the lengths and ends starting 2 cm from the root; after 10-15 minutes apply to the roots and leave on for a further 20-25 minutes.
- Touch-up: apply to the regrowth and leave on for 20 minutes, then comb through all the hair for a further 10 minutes.
- Emulsify with a little warm water, massaging for 3-4 minutes, rinse thoroughly and finish with Color Fixx pH 5.5 shampoo.
Expert colourist tips for Vibrant Color 4.0
- Resistant white hair: start the application where the white hair is most glassy (temples, hairline, parting), with 20 vol and the full processing time. On very resistant virgin hair, 30 vol helps the colour take, as the Code Zero leaflet indicates for resistant hair.
- A lot of white hair: above 70% white hair, a brown can look hard and the regrowth shows sooner. For a softer result use half 4.0 and half 5.0, or 5.0 on its own, always with 20 vol.
- From dark brown to a softer look: on a level 3 base with white hair, 4.0 instead of 3.0 covers the white hair one level lighter and lightens the natural hair by three quarters of a tone at most: the regrowth line is less visible.
- Lengths at the touch-up: dark shades build up on the lengths with every service and the ends turn darker and duller. For the last 10 minutes on the lengths prepare a second bowl with Oxidizer 10 vol, or 5 vol (10 vol and 0 vol in equal parts) if the ends are very porous.
- Going lighter later: a brown is hard to lift afterwards: a colour does not lift a colour, so going back to a lighter shade needs lightening, often in more than one step. Tell the client before the first service.
- Never on bleached hair without pre-pigmentation: from a level 7 or lighter base, first 4.6 Deep Red Brown with 10 vol, then 4.0 (see the worked case).
New to the salon: quick guide and common mistakes
The words on this page. Level: how light or dark the hair is, from 1 (black) to 10 (platinum blond). Reflect: the tone of the colour; .0 means natural, no added reflect. Vol: the strength of the Oxidizer (10 vol = 3%, 20 vol = 6%, 30 vol = 9%, 40 vol = 12%). Regrowth: the new hair at the root. Deposit: colour added without lifting. Tone on tone: same level as the base. Pre-pigmentation: a warm colour applied before a much darker shade, to give the hair the pigment it lacks.
Before you start. Determine the level of the base. Assess the percentage of white hair. Do a strand test on a new base.
Common mistakes. Expecting 4.0 to lighten a very dark base. Applying 4.0 directly on bleached or very light hair. Choosing the volume before looking at the base. Using a metal bowl. Using Oxidizer 0 vol on its own: it does not develop the colour.

- vs Vibrant Color 3.0 Dark Brown: level 3, one level darker with the same natural reflect, lifts half a tone at most. 3.0 is deeper; 4.0 is softer on white hair.
- vs Vibrant Color 5.0 Light Brown: level 5, one level lighter, lifts up to 1 tone. On a lot of white hair 5.0 gives an even softer result than 4.0.

4.0 is the natural shade of level 4. Which Oxidizer volume does Vibrant Color 4.0 need?
According to the Code Zero leaflet: 10 vol to darken or colour without lifting, also on bleached hair; 20 vol for tone on tone and to cover white hair; 30 vol to lift more, for resistant hair and for first applications; 40 vol for ultra-lightening. With 4.0, in practice 20 vol with white hair and 10 vol without.
20 vol or 30 vol for the first application?
The Code Zero leaflet also gives 30 vol for first applications: on very resistant virgin hair it helps the colour take, but it lifts the base slightly. With 4.0 20 vol is usually enough; keep 30 vol for virgin hair that does not take the colour.
How much Vibrant Color 4.0 does one service need?
50 ml of cream with 50 ml of Oxidizer. One 100 ml tube covers two services of this amount.
Does Vibrant Color 4.0 cover white hair?

All deliveries are made against signature on receipt. You receive the tracking link by email or SMS.
Damaged or uncollected parcels
If the parcel arrives damaged, report it within 48 hours: photograph the packaging and the products, keep the box for the carrier inspection, and send us the images together with your order number. We file the claim with DHL.
If a parcel comes back to us because of a wrong address, failure to collect within the deadline or refusal on delivery, both the carrier return costs and the original shipping fee are deducted from your refund.
Returns and refunds
You can request a return within 14 days of receipt, from the self-service area of your account or by writing to customer care.
For hygiene reasons we only accept products that are intact, unused and still sealed. If the seal is open or the product shows signs of use, the return is refused.
If the error is ours, the return is free. Otherwise return shipping is at your expense, 5% of the product price is withheld for logistics and quality control, and the original shipping fee is not refunded.
The refund is processed within 3 business days of the returned product being checked.
Subscription
On products that offer it you can set up automatic delivery every 30 or 60 days, with automatic billing. Subscribers have priority access to stock.
You can pause, skip a delivery, change address or payment method and cancel at any time from your account, with no penalty.
